Dr. Alurkar is qualified as a Neurologist, MD Neurology from KEM Hospital, Mumbai, India & DNB Neurology in 2000. He has also undergone a one year fellowship in Interventional Neuroradiology in 2003 at Bombay Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Anil Karapurkar, who is considered the pioneer in this field in India. He heads neurology practice at NOVOCellular Medicine Institute and is Investigator of Clinical Trials studying the efficacy and safety of Stem Cells in patients suffering from neurological disorders.
Thus, Dr. Alurkar is an Interventional Neurologist, a rare breed; (there are only three other Neurologists in India who are formally trained in these procedures)as far as Pune is considered, he returned after training in early 2004 as the first formally trained Neuro Interventionist in the city. Since then, he is actively and independently performing both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and finds his basic training as a Neurologist an immense advantage in managing these patients, as it is the patient as a whole who needs to be treated and not just the angiogram images.
He has performed many interventional procedures including Aneurysm Coiling, Extra Cranial Stenting, Intracranial Stenting, Intra-Arterial Thrombolysis for acute Ischemic Stroke, Embolization of AVMs, Pre-Op Embolization of CNS Tumours and local Thrombolysis for Venous Sinus Thrombosis, between some. Nevertheless, Dr. Alurkar’s special interest lies in Intra Cranial Stenting and he currently has one of the largest series of these patients in India.
